    Avertissement : cet article a été écrit par une noob très bon public qui n’a jamais joué à Pokemon sur Gameboy de sa vie – voire pas de Gameboy du tout, en fait (« noooon le choc ») – et qui a décidé de rattraper son enfance en testant un jeu mobile tout nouveau tout beau : Pokemon Go !

    Warning: this article was written by a total newbie, good audience who had never played Pokemon on a Gameboy before – or well, never had a Gameboy at all, to be totally honest (“no waaaay how is that possible ?!”) – and who, that way, decided to fall back into childhood by testing a mobile phone game app of a brand new game: Pokemon Go!

    Bien sûr, certains diront qu’il n’est pas encore sorti en France, tout ça tout ça. Alors au cas où vous seriez passé à côté de l’info, on peut se débrouiller pour l’avoir avant sa sortie française officielle. Comment le télécharger – et le tout, légalement ? Tout est expliqué ici pour les utilisateurs d’iPhone (il paraît que c’est plus simple sous android).

    Some people will be like “oh but it’s not even available in countries like France”. Well not… yet! Just in case you missed it, there are several way to download it anyway, legally. Google should really easily help you with that, as usually. 

    Maintenant que tout le monde est content avec la recette magique, avant de l’appliquer ou de vous lancer – ou après, c’est comme vous voulez – c’est parti pour vous donner mon avis sur l’appli (« genre la meuf elle fait des rimes, tout ça tout ça, non mais t’as vu ») !

    Now that everyone is happy, getting their super magic way to get the app, before downloading it or even launching it – or after, it’s completely up to you – here we go with my own opinion on the game (100% subjective and maybe irrelevant, who knows haha) !

• Des bugs. Beaucoup. // Lots of errors. 

Je ne sais pas si ça vient de mon téléphone, mais j’ai eu tellement de bugs qu’il a fallu que je réinstalle plusieurs fois l’application – heureusement que c’est enregistré sur votre compte Google ou autre et que donc, tout n’est pas à recommencer à zéro à chaque fois. Il paraît que c’est spécifique à l’IOS, mais ça reste à confirmer. Sans parler des moments de saturation de serveur. C’est cadeau. Mais en même temps, on va pas se plaindre, on était même pas censé avoir l’appli – pour l’instant !

I don’t know if that’s because of my phone, but I had to face so many bugs/errors that I had to delete and download the app again and again several times – thankfully, you don’t have to start from zero again each and every time: it’s all recorded without you having to do anything for it, no worries. I heard it was specific to IOS devices, but I wouldn’t say that’s for sure. And… That’s without speaking about the numerous times when the server is overloaded. You’re so welcome. But to be honest, I can’t complain about it: we’re not even supposed to be able to get the app in France – yet!

• Niveau graphique, on aurait pu s’attendre à mieux, mais c’est hyper sympa quand même

En termes de graphisme, les fans de Pokémon risquent de rester un peu sur leur faim. Certes, ils ne sont pas non plus horribles, comme vous pouvez le voir sur les screens illustrant cet article (scrooooll dooooown), mais on aurait pu s’attendre à bien mieux ! En plus, il fait nuit à 18h, bref, le jeu est bloqué à l’heure d’hiver. Voilà.

Dealing with graphic design, Pokémon fans might be leaving a bit disappointed: of course, it is not that awful, as you can see on the different screenshots in this article (scrooooll doooown if you’re curious), but we could have expected way much better from this developers! Plus, it’s already night time in the game at 6pm even in France. It’s like if the game was stuck at winter time haha.

• Le jeu vidéo qui te fait sortir de chez toi…

Pour progresser dans ce jeu, impossible de rester coincé dans son canapé – sauf à faire partie de ces chanceux qui vivent à côté d’un lieu qui sert de PokeStop et d’arène, et encore. Il faut sortir de chez soi, bouger. Ca aurait été le jeu vidéo idéal des mamans qui veulent que leurs gamins sortent prendre l’air, en fait – sauf qu’ils auront encore le nez collé sur leur écran. Donc… En fait non. (C’était le moment réflexion pratique inutile, you’re welcome.)

To level up in this game, there is no way for you to just stay in your couch and play there – unless you’re part of these lucky ones who lives near a PokéStop or Arena, but even that wouldn’t be that efficient. You have to get out. To move. That could have been the ideal video game for all of these mothers wanting for their kids to go out and get some fresh air – if it didn’t kept them extremely focused on their phone screen. (Yep, you’re welcome for that “super practical analysis moment”.)

• … Faire du sport … 

En jouant, vous allez récupérer des oeufs, que vous devez incuber pour les faire éclore. Sauf que pour que cela fonctionne, il faut faire entre 2 et 10km. Si ça se trouve, on peut “tricher” en les faisant dans les transports, mais je n’ai pas testé personnellement – la fois où j’ai essayé d’attraper un Pokemon dans le tram, ça a fait buguer l’application dans le plus grand des calmes. Voilà ! Bref, pour en revenir aux oeufs, vous avez même des médailles de joggeurs pour le nombre de kilomètres réalisés pour les faire éclore. Tout ça pour pousser les gens à faire du sport, histoire de se donner bonne conscience en pensant faire quelque chose pour la santé d’une armée de geeks. J’aimerais bien voir les stats de cette partie du jeu, moi…

While playing, you’ll collect some eggs, that you have to incubate to get them to hatch. But fact is that to get that to work, you need to move between 2 and 10km. Maybe you can make it easier by using transports, but I haven’t personally tried yesterday – the only time I tried to catch a Pokemon in the tramway, that created an error in the app and boom! Had to download everything again. Oops. Don’t do that. Anyway, to come back to the eggs, you can even get some joggers award according to how many kilometers/miles you did to make them hatch. That’s such a strategy to make every video game addict and other kind of geeks/nerds do some sport, pretending to care about their health, right? I’d be super curious to know about the statistics for this part of the game…

• … Et redécouvrir ta ville !

Plutôt que de vous servir un long paragraphe, je vous laisse avec quelques exemples des nombreuses petites découvertes qui font partie des nombreux PokeStops sur lesquels vous tomberez pendant votre course aux Pokémon.

This time, I won’t write that much. I’ll just let you admire some examples of what I found in Montpellier, France, while playing and exploring some of the super numerous PokeStops you can find in the game. The first one means “No arms, no chocolate”, by the way.

• C’est franchement très drôle

En plus des noms de certains endroits, le concept lui-même est quand même hyper cool : même si t’as l’air très con à essayer de pécho ton Pokémon en plein milieu de la rue ou même dans ton Monoprix (tout est possible après tout), forcément, voir des Pokémon au milieu de ta rue, sachant que personne d’autre ne les voit, et en plus essayer de les chopper, personnellement j’attends que l’appli soit officiellement sortie en France pour voir tout le monde s’arrêter tous les deux mètres avec un air hyper concentré ! Et les situations de gros malaise que ça engendre, en mode toi en train d’essayer de jeter ta Poké Ball au milieu d’une foule qui pense que tu les prends en photo, ou pire : sur une personne en particulier, genre cette petite mamie qui du coup te regarde carrément de travers parce que concrètement, ton objectif était braqué sur elle, on en parle ? A l’étranger, ça a aussi déclenché pas mal de situations comiques et improbables, comme vous pouvez le lire ici. Ou encore dans tous les articles que les gens partagent en masse sur les réseaux sociaux. Enjoy!

More than the names of some places and other stuff, the concept of the game itself is super funny: even though you actually look quite silly trying to catch your Pokemon in the middle of the street or even in a shop (everything is possible), fact is, seeing Pokémon in the middle of the street, being the only one seeing them since it’s all in your screen, and moreover trying to catch them, well I’m curious to see how it goes once it will be officially launched in France, become viral and everyone starts stopping/freezing in the street a very focused way haha! Plus, it can generate super awkward situations: imagine playing the game and trying to throw your Poké Ball in the middle of a crowd thinking you’re taking picture of them, or even worst: having your Pokémon on one particular person and having to throw the Ball on him/her, such as a little grandma thinking you’re taking picture of her or making fun of her? Oh no… It also caused a lot of hilarious situations in some places abroad, but hey I guess your social networks were already full of it so I won’t force-feed you with more of it. 

• Grosse hypothèse sur les effets secondaires : est-ce qu’à être hyper concentrés sur les Pokémons et PokéStops qu’ils essayent d’attraper, voire trop pour se préoccuper des nanas qui les entourent, ce jeu n’aurait pas éventuellement moyen de diminuer des trucs genre harcèlement de rue et compagnie ? C’est beau de rêver haha. D’autres parlent aussi du fait que ça peut pas mal aider certains commerces parce que ça pousse les gens à se balader et à regarder un peu autour d’eux, et j’en passe. On sait jamais, après tout ! // Let’s make some assumption: what if being super focused on Pokémon and PokéStops would reduce street harassment, bullying and other stuff like these, ’cause people would be way too focused on the game to even think about it and do anything? Would be more peaceful but well, maybe that’s too naive. Some people also wrote about the benefits of this game for some shops and businesses, saying it can promote it and really help. Who knows, why not! Only time will say.
• Une pensée pour les gens qui vivent en pleine campagne et pour qui cela risque d’être un peu compliqué – ou juste super ennuyeux – de jouer ! // I had a thought for all of these guys living in the country side and for whom this game might be super boring… Sorry for you guys!
